Cinderella at the Power Ball: How To Get Ready For A Big Event

I love galas and balls (events, nawt #balls!) — any excuse to get dressed up and mingle. There are only a handful of really awesome annual events in Toronto that I find seriously notable — Brazillian Ball, ROM Prom, Innovators’s Ball, Power Ball, and a few other selections.

When I found out some friends and I were going to this year’s Power Ball, I knew I had to pull out all the stops to look and feel like a perfect ten. As a total fashion n00b, I needed all the help I could get and I’ve made some notes and tips from my journey to hopefully help you out the next time you are going to a big event, or the Power Ball!

Power Ball is the gallery’s largest annual fundraiser. From its inception in 1999, Power Ball has set the standard as the most influential, vibrant and original contemporary art party. Attracting a sophisticated “who’s who” crowd of artists, fashionistas, celebrities, and financiers from the world of film, advertising, music, design, and art, this is one sensational party providing vital funds to the exhibition and public programs at The Power Plant.

So, what’s the big deal about this event you might ask? Check out what BlogTO had to say about this year’s party.

A reported 1,700 people will migrate to The Power Plant gallery for its annual fundraiser for Canadian contemporary art. Described as “part social extravaganza, part art exhibition,” this year’s theme is the eerie Thirteenth Floor, a place you hear about but rarely ever go. Of course, it promises to be the most talked about party – until the end of June that is. – BlogTO

The Dress

Now you understand the pressure I was under! First thing was the dress — what you wear can totally make a difference in how you look, feel, even the way you walk into the room. Having just wore my favourite event dresses over the past few months, I had to buy a new dress (no time or money), rewear a recent dress and hope no one notices (I’d be self-conscious the whole night), or borrow from a friend. Luckily, Natalie came to the rescue with two fantastic dress options to borrow!

I just noticed how pancakes photo-bombed these shots, ha!! Anyhow, they were both so beautiful, but the grey bondage dress was just a little too form-fitting for me to feel comfortable in all night, so I opted for the black and gold option to negate the need to suck-it-in all night.

The Look

For hair and makeup, I needed some real help so I went to the professionals at Conair (@Conair_Hair). Luckily, they were helping a lot of bloggers out with their pre-Power Ball beautification at the Thompson hotel… so all I had to do was show up and they would do the rest! (phew!)

Showing up at the #Conairpowerhair beauty lounge coordinated by the lovely ladies at Rock It Promotions (@rockitpromo), I was blown away by the whole thing: celebrities like Melissa Grelo (@melissagrelo) and Tanya Kim (@Tanya_Kim) were uber sweet and looking fantastic; there was also tons of champagne, sushi, cheese platters and tons of gorgeous ladies everywhere. This was mecca.

Tanya Kim and Melissa Grelo were sooo nice and down to earth! Serious love for MG’s dress/shorts — teh hawtness!

My old bud and fellow blogger Eva (@Lowecocolowe) was mid-way through her beautification process when I arrived

The Hair

They got started on my hair… weapon of choice? Conair Infiniti curler for the sex kitten loose curls that scream freshly you-know-what.  #bowchika

Then I made friends with the girls at Seven Dollar Pants (@7dollarpants)  and Back Seat Stylers (@Backseatstyler) who were so gorgeous and sweet!

The Face

For the face, I took my friend Victoria’s advice to go with big eyes with big fake lashes. Otherwise, I told the makeup artist to go crazy! She brought out the falsies and I had to ask — what is the trick to putting those things on and them staying on all night? I always find a corner will pop off or they never seem to go against my lashes perfectly. So she gave me a quick tutorial to share with all of you!

And the finished look!

Huge thank you to Natalie for the dress, as well as Rock It Promotions and Conair for helping me look the part! Check out part two — the actual Power Ball event!

…and the fake lashes stayed on all night!
